Being a former client of Harford Family House, I’m choosing to share my story because the organization means so much to myself and my three children, Aiden, Braison and Dasja. In January 2015 I was experiencing an issue of domestic abuse and was desperately in need of help. My children and I were able to find temporary shelter in a hotel, but the funds made available to assist us were soon going to run out – leaving us with nowhere to turn after 11 a.m. on a Thursday. It was an incredibly stressful morning, but I received the call of a lifetime from a case manager at Harford Family House. They wanted to interview me for an apartment opening. Not sure of my chances of being selected, I attended the interview. A few hours later I was ecstatic to hear that me and my children would soon be able to move into a full-furnished apartment provided by Harford Family House.
While staying with the organization, I was provided the support and encouragement I needed to complete a culinary training program (of which I’m happy to report that I maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated one of the top 4 in my class!) and a variety of other things. From assistance with seeking permanent housing options to getting my licensee and securing a vehicle of my own through the organization’s Wheels for Work program, Harford Family House was there for my family and me every step of the way toward regaining our independence. Kathy, my case manager, was always there to lend an ear and hear me talk about all of my successes – I am so thankful to her and for the relationship we built together.
We left Harford Family House in 2017; I’m happy to report that my family has permanent housing, I’ve maintained the same job for three years and I’m working toward my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with plans to graduate in 2020. The housing, resources, and support provided by Harford Family House was indeed a blessing. I’d like to extend a thank you to each and every single member of the organization for the support and opportunities they provided.
