Paranoid Schizophrenia - Thinks Happy Thoughts One of the people in our Permanent Housing Program is diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia. The medical professions recommendation? - diagnose and medicate. Diagnose is good. Medication is necessary, but more can be done. Problem is, few are trying anything else. Our case manager gave this person a journal book and asked that he/she write one positive thought a day. In ten days the resident was so excited. He/she was up to six happy thoughts a day. With this came less stress, some positive thinking, and a better life. Will he/she ever not be paranoid schizophrenic? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean the House will give up on making life better beyond diagnose and medicate. The House is glad to help. Help us help.

Four Families Self-Sufficient From July to September four families transitioned from homelessness to self-sufficiency. The program works. One of the philosophies of the House is, “You can’t make a person independent (self-sufficient) through dependency on the program.” The House helps the homeless help themselves. Just think of it. From sleeping in a car or moving in with relatives (now that’s a scary thought) to renting or owning your own place within a year. THAT’S SUCCESS. The House is glad to help. Help us help.

The Bread Winner is Winning Bread Harford Family House, Inc. is the only organization providing housing for intact families with children. Not all of our families have a dad living with them. Many are single moms with kids. One is a single dad with kids. Most of our intact families (father, mother, children) have dads that are working. Most of them are working full time, but the disparity between the cost of living and wages earned makes self-sufficiency difficult. Through budgeting and goal setting and time to save the money for down payments, it can be done. The House is happy to report that the father of an intact family has found full time work. They were living in their car before coming to us. They are motivated and I know their transition to self-sufficiency will be within their year. The House is glad to help. Help us help.

Teens Stuff Cans or Nuts to You, Teens On a recent snow day, the case manager for Harford Family House asked our five teenagers (formerly numbered with the homeless) to stuff bags of peanuts into 1000 tin cans picturing a Maryland theme and stick a label on top with our logo. This was a Christmas fund raiser. These are great kids and we are glad to have them at the House.. Thanks, kids Help us help.
